Why you should row the ergo as if it was your boat

so when your teaching beginners in
particular how to take the catch if you remember when we talked about the blade going into the water then we have to let the blade go in and let our seat
move a little bit with it whilst we get that connection so really
what it is about on an ergo is understanding that you know the hands to
come up before you push now it sounds odd to practice to catch on an Ergo
relating to the boat but we’re trying to row well in a boat for this exercise
so on an ergo what I suggest you do is have the athletes particularly the
beginner athletes come into the catch and then make sure they consciously lift
their hands up before they push so into the front body in the right position
lift push and I’d suggest practice that so when I get into the boat they understand
the concept that at the catch you lift then you push you don’t push then lift you
don’t push and lift at the same time you come to the front you lift your arms put
the blade in and push and you want them to have their arm so that they’re not
parallel with the floor because that’s a little bit too high about that sort of
height so there’s a little bit of an angle there and you’ll find that that’s
pretty close to what our experience in the boat so when you’re on the Ergo unless you’re
trying to get like a good score in a 2k test where you might be finishing way
back here something like that it’s just not realistic for rowing and practicing
rowing if you want to be on the water so every time you’re on the ERG I suggest
you try and row like you would on the water so incorporate a little tap down
at the finish so tap down with the hands draw it up nice and tall like you
would in the boat tap down to catch likewise we want to
take the catch even though there’s no catch on an ergo technically it’s like just up
and down the machine try to keep your hands at the same height so tap down constant height up at the catch like this so what you can do is get a little bit
of tape so see how this ergos go a little bit of tape on it this can be a
good guide for where you want the catch to be so you know for me this catch just
bit of tape spoke perfectly at the finish position for me this is where my
blades in the water so at the catch though I probably want to make sure just
above it tap down, the blade is effectively out of the water, in the water, out of the water you want to get that movement so when you’re on the ergo
don’t think of it just as a training tool for your cardiovascular system you
can actually work on work on your technique as well so just get that tap
down simulating what you’re doing on the water and at the catch make sure you get
the hands up you don’t want to be lifting with the shoulders all
the same technical things apply just lift up a little bit
drive tap down and so you can really make some good technique changes and
practice what you’re gonna be doing in the boat while you’re on the go the last
thing you want to be doing on the Ergo is improving your fitness while
decreasing the technique in your boat on the water so you might get a fitness
gain from the ergo but if you’re doing it wrong and you’ve been lazy you’re not
practicing like you would in the boat you can actually become slower and
develop some very bad habits by just rowing carelessly on the Ergo so just
think about what you’re doing try and simulate the boat as much as possible
and work on those technical changes that you know you’ve you’ve identified as
problem areas for yourself or your coach has so make the most of your time on the
Ergo don’t just use it for fitness training
